Looking for an evening storytime? Bound Brook Library is offering Campfire Adventures on Wednesdays July 18-Aug. 15th, 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM(Ages 5 - 9) Finish your day at the library around our simulated campfire to sing songs and listen to some exciting stories. Daydreaming: Dreams & Fantasies - 'Where the Wild Things Are' Wednesday July 18, 2012 (for students entering grades 1-5) From 2-3pm Registration begins required. Join us as we share Maurice Sendak's story 'Where the Wild Things Are,' and then create our own 'wild thing' puppets, rehearse and present a puppet play for family members and library visitors.

Lunch Bunch: 'Cat Diaries: Secret Writings of the MEOW Society' by Betsy Byars (Grades 3-4) Monday, July 23rd from Noon-1pm Registration required. On one night every year, cats in the MEOW Society, which stands for 'Memories Expressed in Our Writing,' gather to read from their diaries, hearing stories of a gypsy cat, a Caribbean pirate cat, a library cat, and many others.

Days of Knight (Grades K-5) Saturday, August 4th From 10:30-11:30am Registration begins July 20th.Through a unique fusion of medieval history and storytelling, we deliver an engaging, interactive, hands-on experience that inspires young learners as they travel back to Medieval Times, back to the days of kings and castles, swordfights and jousts, adventure and romance, chivalry and honor.
Just like the heroes in these stories, volunteers from the audience will have their knees buckle under the weight of real steel armor, experience the solitude inside a jousting helm, feel the surge of power from wielding a knight's broadsword, and much more.We invite you to travel back in time with us as we explore knighthood, arms, armor, and chivalry!

Join local author Patricia Brady-Danzig as she reads her wonderful new story “Fabrizio’s Fable” in both English and Italian. Children will learn the beautiful Italian language when this charming story about Fabrizio and Luigi is read to them. Ms. Brady will also lead children through an original song performed in both languages.After the program, the author will be available to talk about her debut book, as well as sign copies for program attendees.

Movie and a Sundae (Grades 6-12): Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (Rated PG for some adventure action, and brief mild language)Monday July 23, 2012 Registration required.
Come cool off at the library by making your own ice cream sundae and watching a good movie! The new journey begins when young adventurer Sean receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist, a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes, and more than one astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from going, Sean's new stepfather joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter, they set out to find the island.


Talk It Up: 'Hatchet' by Gary Paulsen (Grades 5-8) Tuesday, July 24th from 7-8 pm Registration required. Book Discussion. After a plane crash, thirteen-year-old Brian spends fifty-four days in the Canadian wilderness, learning to survive with only the aid of a hatchet given him by his mother, and learning also to survive his parents' divorce.

Hello Cupcake! (Grades 6-12) Monday, July 30 From 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm Registration required. Attention future Cake Bosses: Here’s your chance to show us your cupcake decorating skills! Each participant will have the opportunity to decorate their own cupcake using icing, candy, and other edible decorations (just like in the book Hello Cupcake!). At the end of the program, we’ll vote on the most creative cupcakes and prizes will be given!

THE WIZ is an urbanized retelling of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; THE WIZ was adapted from the 1975 Broadway musical of the same name specifically for young audiences. The story follows the adventures of Dorothy, a shy young girl who finds herself magically transported to the Land of Oz, which resembles a fantasy version of New York City. Befriended by a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion, she travels through the land to seek an audience with the mysterious "Wiz", who they say has the power to take her home.
THE WIZ is a new summer initiative of the Growing Stage that features the talents of high school and college aged students under the direction of the company’s professional artistic team.

REVIEW: “A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM @ TRILOGY REP IN PLEASANT VALLEY PARK

The gods of drama must have taken one look at our gloomy economic situation and the sniping presidential candidates and decided that there would be "tragedy tomorrow, comedy tonight"! In the same comedic vein as the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, the troupe called Trilogy Rep has mounted a rollicking production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum out in Pleasant Valley Park in Basking Ridge that rivals the recent Paper Mill Playhouse production in quality and fun.  Read More of Ruth Ross’s wonderful review.

"FORUM" will be followed next weekend by a COURTROOM DRAMA BY BERNARDSVILLE PLAYWRIGHT ONSTAGE @ TRILOGY REPThis courtroom drama is a perfect introduction to serious theater for your teenagers, what with the battle over evolution continuing today.

INHERIT THE WIND, by Hugh Wallace of Bernardsville,offers a fictionalized account of the famous 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial of John Scopes for teaching Charles Darwin’s “Theory of Evolution” to his high school science classes in Tennessee. In that trial, former Vice President William Jennings Bryan prosecuted John Scopes for breaking the law, which forbade the teaching of evolution in Tennessee schools. The famous Clarence Darrow defended the science teacher while reporter, H. L. Mencken, covered the trial.
The authors, Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, used the 1925 trial to explore the Communist witchhunt of the McCarthy hearings of the 1950s, similar to the device used by Arthur Miller in “The Crucible.”
Presenting INHERIT THE WIND as an allegory, the authors created fictional names for the famous players: Bertram Cates  represented Scopes: Matthew Brady stood in for the prosecutor Bryan; Henry Drummond  became the defender Darrow, while E. K. Hornbeck  represented the reporter Mencken. 
And the price is right: Both FORUM & WIND are FREE. No parking, no tolls, bring a picnic and blanket and you’re set for an exciting evening of theater.

Home runs, fly balls and devilishly good fun all meet at home plate in the Broadway musical comedy, DAMN YANKEES. Set during the 1950's in Washington D.C., the musical is a contemporary retelling of Faust.
Based on Wallop's novel The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant, the musical tells the story of a middle-aged baseball fanatic who trades his soul to the Devil for a chance to lead his favorite team in the pennant race against The New York Yankees, only to realize the true worth of the life (and wife) he left behind.
Come early and picnic in the park grove. Box office opens at 5:30 PM. Bring your chair and set it up in the spot you choose. You can leave it there with the knowledge that no one will move it (ah! the honor system!). If you get your hand stamped, you can leave the theater and return later, before the show starts. This is a great family show! Bring the kids!

Circle Players, 416 Victoria Ave., Piscataway, will present its summer children’s show, “The Adventures of Nate the Great,” which follows the plots and retains the style of Marjorie Weinman Sharmat’s beloved children’s books on Saturday, July 21 2012, at noon and 3:00pm All tickets $10. The Adventures of Nate the Great by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat. On a darkened stage, a tall figure in a trench coat and fedora blows a warm jazz refrain on a saxophone. This taller figure is joined by a much smaller figure, dressed in an identical trench coat and fedora. As the smaller figure raises his head, we see that under his fedora is a small boy. There is nothing ordinary about his expression; it is very "cool" and very serious. He is Nate the Great, the sharpest kid detective ever to solve his neighborhood's mysteries. With his faithful dog, Sludge, and his friends, he solves important cases, always remembering to leave a note for his mother and wear his galoshes! It's a spoof of "B" movie mysteries and a perspective of a child's vision of life's everyday mysteries — when past, present and future all combine to create a wonderful Now.

 Beaumarchais’ “The Marriage of Figaro” presented as part of the NJ Shakespeare FREE picnic series.  6 p.m. on Sunday July 22nd behind the Shakespeare Theater on the Drew Campus.
Adapted from the play by Pierre Beaumarchais and directed by Heather Robinson, this joyful romp about courtship, marriage and married life is a contagiously good time for the whole family.  Figaro and Suzanne’s efforts to wed demand all of their wit, creativity, and passion as they attempt to thwart a not-so-noble Count’s attempts to seduce the would-be-bride and fend off a lawsuit that would force Figaro to marry the housekeeper.  They weave a plot that not only allows them to get married, but it helps the Count and Countess rediscover their own true love.   Aided by the incorrigible young Cherubin, the drunk gardener Antonio, and the pompous Doctor Bartholo, Figaro’s journey to the altar is a hilarious and madcap one.  Bring blanket or lawn chairs.  This free play is suitable for ages 8 and up. All ages are welcome to this one-hour sensory-friendly program. The show will provide a comfortable and judgment-free space that is welcoming to all families. The doors will remain open so that children will be able to come and go. Lights will be left dim and audio will be lowered and at a consistent level. INTRODUCTORY HORSEBACK RIDES- Try Riding English-Style at Lord Stirling Stable Sunday, July 22, 2012

BASKING RIDGE, NJ – Somerset County Park Commission Lord Stirling Stable, located at 256 South Maple Avenue in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, is offering Introductory English-style horseback rides on Sunday, July 22, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. Register at the Stable office between 9:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. daily beginning Monday, July 9 and ending Thursday, July 19. Space is limited.
Participants will enjoy a mini group lesson with one of Lord Stirling Stable’s riding instructors followed by a one-hour guided trail ride through Lord Stirling Park.
The Introductory Ride is an opportunity for novices who are considering riding lessons to sample a trail ride on horseback and see if they enjoy the experience. It is also a great “refresher” for those who have not ridden in a long time. The ride will take place rain or shine, and may be held in the indoor ring in the case of inclement weather.

Space Shapes & Tycho to the Moon

Exploring shapes in space: are the Moon and its orbit "round" like a ball or a pancake? Play connect-the-dots with the stars to find triangles and squares and constellations. Meet Tycho, a dog who doesn't just howl at the Moon, but wants to go there. Blast off on an amazing ride. Learn about night and day, space travel, the phases of the Moon, and features of the lunar surface. Watch meteors shoot across the sky and see the Earth from space. (recommended for ages 5-10 accompanied by an adult)

SkyLights Thursdays, July 5 – August 23
3:00 p.m. Our youngest audience members can sing along with songs by mr. RAY (Family Ride, Kalien the Alien) and Jane Murphy (Moon Rock Rock, The Planet Song). Some songs are illustrated with lasers and other songs feature video images. (recommended for ages 5-10)

From comic books to sculpture, painting, drawing, photography and collage, the Morris Museum Studio Art program offers week-long classes this summer for children and teens. High school students can develop skills required for their visual arts portfolios.
