Mike Agranoff

Feast your ears and eyes! Come enjoy stories of fantasy, heartbreak, wisdom, and whimsy in a fabulous sculpture park setting on Sunday, September 18, 2016 from noon to 6pm. More than forty New Jersey storytellers will regale listeners with tales for all ages at sites throughout the Grounds For Sculpture, a 42-acre sculpture park with more than two hundred and seventy sculptures with works by J. Seward Johnson and other international artists.

A story slam with the theme “Out of the Frying Pan” will begin the fun at noon; contestants will be chosen at random to recount their personal story in five minutes or less. The event’s signature close, the Lightning Round, will polish off the afternoon with 10 tellers who perform two-minute tales in rapid succession. Prior to the festival, workshops are offered from 9:45-11:45 am for educators and others interested in storytelling techniques. Click here for workshop information.

The event will be at The Grounds For Sculpture, 18 Fairgrounds Road, Hamilton NJ 08619 (GPS use 126 Sculptors Way) 609-586-0616. The Grounds opens at 10 am. Experimental treatments seek to stem rising tide of food allergies

Based on recent numbers, doctors expect 4.1 million children to develop a food allergy this year.

Ninety percent of cases will be to eight allergens: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish.

The CDC approximates the overall prevalence of childhood food allergies around 8% and rising, and doctors are puzzled as to why that number keeps increasing.

While there is no cure for food allergies, many experimental treatments are in the works to combat this growing problem, which puts an estimated $25 billion burden on the U.S. economy each year. READ MORE.

Why Words are Like Toothpaste -- Thoughts on Starting Middle School from Amy Beth Gardner

My daughter starts middle school tomorrow. We've decorated her locker, bought new uniforms, even surprised her with a new backpack. But tonight just before bed, we did another pre-middle school task that is far more important than the others. I gave her a tube of toothpaste and asked her to squirt it out onto a plate. When she finished, I calmly asked her to put all the toothpaste back in the tube. She began exclaiming things like "But I can't!" and "It won't be like it was before!" I quietly waited for her to finish and then said the following:

"You will remember this plate of toothpaste for the rest of your life. Your words have the power of life or death. As you go into middle school, you are about to see just how much weight your words carry. You are going to have the opportunity to use your words to hurt, demean, slander and wound others. You are also going to have the opportunity to use your words to heal, encourage, inspire and love others. You will occasionally make the wrong choice; I can think of three times this week I have used my own words carelessly and caused harm. Just like this toothpaste, once the words leave your mouth, you can't take them back. Use your words carefully, Breonna. When others are misusing their words, guard your words. Make the choice every morning that life-giving words will come out of your mouth. Decide tonight that you are going to be a life-giver in middle school. Be known for your gentleness and compassion. Use your life to give life to a world that so desperately needs it. You will never, ever regret choosing kindness."
