Brady Rymer was a founding member of the much-loved roots/rock bandFrom Good Homes, a band with deep Northern New Jersey roots, touring for thirteen years with Bob Dylan, Dave Matthews and the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir, before parenthood broadened the audience of his music to include young and old alike.

First class, all-American rock ‘n’ roll with a feel-good R&B foundation is Rymer’s calling card; his show with the Little Band That Could creates a happy, rollicking back-porch vibe that gets children and their families up and dancing, and smiling from ear to ear. People Magazine calls Rymer a “fave” of families everywhere; kids love the energy and Rymer’s magnetic, good-times-guy charm, and the band’s musicianship is something even the most discerning music-loving parent can appreciate.

Nina Music’s blending of sign language, movement and music has been a big hit in live performances, most recently as a featured children’s performer at Musikfest, one of the country’s largest music festivals. Her performance will get the audience joining her to Sing – Sign – Dance!

Presenting music with the whole family in mind, Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could will showcase favorites from all of Brady’s albums, including tunes from the GRAMMY-nominated Here Comes Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could. They’ll be sure to perform their hit Jump Up (It’s A Good Day)”; whose percolating rhythms are as uplifting as they are infectious, bringing audiences to their feet – and some into the air!  They will also play “Love Me For Who I Am,” inspired by Brady’s work with children on the autism spectrum at Celebrate the Children School in Wharton.

The New York Daily News sums it all up nicely:  “Rymer and his Little Band That Could get the whole family groovin’!”

And one more very offbeat Halloween Weekend Activity

While not exactly a cultural event, this one looks like fun…and a great way to get rid of those pumpkins rotting on your front steps:

The Last Fling Pumpkin Sling is not a new idea. Each year a large "Punkin’ Chunkin’ Festival" is held in the state of Delaware. The idea to have one in Northern New Jersey was inspired by the abundant farmland and natural beauty of our area (and of course, the creative team down in Delaware.)

Sponsored by the Highlands Tourism Partnership, a newly formed group whose mission is to promote the natural beauty of the Highlands area, encouraging visitation to our farms, natural resources and historic sites.

The Highlands Tourism Partnership will encourage school groups to build a device—a catapult or trebechet—that can “sling” a pumpkin. The project will be a collaboration of brain and brawn as students work together as a team. The teams will come together to compete. (Adults may enter as well.)

Pumpkin Carving Contest
Deliver pumpkin(s) to the farm market at Hensler Farms on October 30 from 10–11 AM. Judging will be from 11 AM to 12:30 PM. Registration fee is $3.

Divisions:
Youth:    12-17
Adult:     18 & older

Winners: All pumpkins will be on display at the Hensler Farms in the greenhouse from October 30 and 31. $20 prize for each division.

And what would a Pumpkin themed event be without a Pumpkin Recipe Contest?

The Pumpkin Patch Childrens' Activity Tent
The Last Fling Pumpkin Sling is a family-oriented event.

There will be plenty to do to keep your children busy including the Pumpkin Patch for Kids—a children's activity tent. Be sure to stop by with the Pumpkin Patch to paint some pumpkins, create some festive spider webs and spiders, and make other hands-on crafts. There will also be fac painting and other fun things to do. The creative staff will make sure your child has a great time during their visit.

BRANCHBURG
At Raritan Valley Community College’s planetarium, there will be two shows:
Spooky Skies will be presented on Saturday, October 30, at 3 and 7 p.m. It takes viewers back to medieval Ireland to explore the roots of the Halloween holiday, and then examines the sky to draw parallels between celestial objects and famous monsters. What does a werewolf have on an inescapable black hole, a noxious deadly planet like Venus, or a dangerous super nova?
Fright Light will be presented on Saturday, October 30, at 4 and 8 p.m. Enjoy a Halloween concert featuring such songs as “Alive” by Meatloaf and “Thriller” by Michael Jackson. The 8 p.m. show contains more frightening content and is appropriate for audiences ages 13 and older.
BRIDGEWATER
Ghost tours of the historic Van Horne House will be conducted on Friday, October 29, by local psychic Jane Doherty
The event is sponsored by the Heritage Trail Association and the 2010 Leadership Somerset class.

Guests will also hear stories from historian and author Donald J. Peck, detailing possible paranormal activity at other historic central New Jersey sites.
Two tours will be held — at 7-8:30 p.m., which will be open to everyone, including children supervised by a parent or guardian, and 9-10:30 p.m., which will be only for adults and (adult-supervised) teens over age 16.
The cost is $10 for adults and teens over 16 (either session) and $5 per child under age 13 attending the early session. Parking is free and available both at the Van Horne House and at Target. SOMERVILLE
Kids are invited to put on their costumes and come downtown on Saturday, October 30, 2-5 p.m. and go trick or treating in the stores that have a pumpkin in the window.
There will be fun and games compliments of the borough library on the front lawn of the United Reformed Church at 100 W. Main St., and the Somerset Civic League will be handing out candy in Giardina Alley, which is off Main Street in the vicinity of CafĆ© Picasso and the East Star Buffet. The alley will be decorated, and a professional photographer will be there to take pictures of kids in their Halloween attire. Parents can arrange to have the photos e-mailed to them. Members of the 4-H will be on hand to act as guides and escorting Sparkee and possibly Slider, the Somerset Patriots’ mascots, as they walk around downtown meeting their admirers.
This event is a production of the Somerville Business and Professional Association, coordinated by Mike Del Gaudio of the Bread Basket Deli.
